San Antonio and the Military

Some of you San Antonio families may be on the verge of sending a loved one off to war again.

Dad, daughter, son, brother, husband, whoever might go from your house, I want to emphasize that Military City USA appreciates them and appreciates you.

I have criticized the Bush administration for its sales job on invading Iraq to go after Saddam Hussein. The president hasn't yet convinced a lot of us that there is a pressing need for that.

Keep the two issues separate:
One, the pitch isn't very convincing yet.
Two, if you or a loved one are called to serve, God Bless you and we ALL appreciate your devotion. I may criticize the mission but YOU I'm 100% behind.

One day a few years back I was talking with a Viet Nam veteran who had called my program on KTSA. In closing our conversation about that old war of some 30 years past, I said something very simple: I said, "Thanks for going over there."

I expected him to say "You're welcome."

But he didn't.

He didn't say anything. The pause grew long. And longer.

Then finally here came his voice, low and emotional. He said, "That's the first time anyone EVER told me Thank You for going to Viet Nam."

My friends, it had been thirty years!

So get a jump on it this time. Tell someone Thanks in advance. Thanks for being there when you're called on by our country.

Even if I don't like the "there" where you may soon have to be.

I'm Brad Messer with commentary at 8:15 on KTSA's Morning Edge.
