8:15 a.m. KTSA Morning Edge Commentary 10/2/2002
Here is another report about regular everyday San Antonio people seizing a public issue, doing the citizen thing, and winning.
This story is about the airport. Since Hemisfair, we've displayed local art at SAT. Even if people didn't like every every painting, we liked the local touch. There are plenty of industrial-strength terminals elsewhere. Our local art at the airport set us apart.
Airport busy, busier all the time, not enough parking, old dowdy terminals, not enough money to fix everything.
Someone, trying to be helpful and solve a problem, got the idea to put ads up on the walls of the terminals and along the walkways to the gates. Revenue generating ads. To make more room for ads, the artwork was removed in January 2001.
One local artist started a petition. Then there were two, and five, and fifty and on and on. I hammered the topic on KTSA and confronted local bigwigs day after day. Finally on September 5th of this year, City Council voted to return regional art to the airport.
A real citizens' victory, because people made time to take part and influence a public issue.
Now the artists must organize to run the new airport operation. Anyone wanting to inquire about the new Regional Artist Consortium, call 824-2424. I'll have the number on my website at brad messer dot com.
This kind of stuff is what local Talk radio can do. A real part of our community, here for you when you want to be heard. Annexation, Airport Art, Clean Air, it makes our day when citizens do their citizen stuff and win!
I'm Brad Messer with commentary at 8:15 on KTSA's Morning Edge.
