They must resign

My 8:15 commentary on Friday poked at the mayor. I said he should send a pack of attorneys to check on canceling the tax-collection contract which may have been obtained with bought votes.

Here's the other thing I said. I looked it up. Quote, "Mr. Garza should make it clear that the only right thing for the accused councilmen to do is resign RIGHT NOW." end quote.

It is horrible form to quote myself, but it's for a good reason. I recall my exact words from Friday because I'm eating them, right now in public.

Later Friday after all my free advice, the mayor did exactly that. Took the indicted ones into the woodshed. Advised them to do the right thing for the city and the citizens. They still wouldn't. Give him credit for trying.

Now elected officials offer laughable ideas: end term limits, form another bureaucratic ethics commission, limit legal campaign contributions, yada. Nothing new is needed other than ethics, honor and accountablity.

If Mayor Garza shows force and tenacity on the issues in our vote-selling scandal, he'll look more like a leader. Quiet, behind the scenes techniques are fine in their place. This ain't the place. Our peculiar situation demands some stomping to move matters in the best direction.

Pressure needs to be increased on the perp-walking councilmen to step aside— for the good of the city, and those on city council who have not assumed the steel bracelets... yet.

I'm Brad Messer with commentary at 8:15 on KTSA's Morning Edge.
