If it was human nature to pay taxes without complaining, we possibly wouldn't be having the birthday party for the United States this weekend.

But of course it is human nature to gripe about taxes. In the 1770s, Americans living here in the British Colonies got rebellious about sending taxes to England, and there was a war over that, and out popped the United States.

Our whole country got started because people thought their taxes were unfair. Taxes can cause big, bad fights.

Maybe that thought will lurk in your mind at your Fourth of July barbecue, picnic, parade, fireworks, wherever you celebrate.

San Antonians have every right to question the fairness of their money enriching construction companies, land developers, and the likes, thru sweetheart deals. As city council works on the proposed new local budget, fairness needs to be the supreme consideration.

Or there could be fireworks.
