Tower Fun

It has now been helpfully suggested that more tourists would be attracted to the Tower of the Americas if you could have some real fun there— say, if you could bungee-jump off of it.

Columnist Michael O'Rourke sluffs off the current tourist-magnet scheme: better food, maybe a fancy nightclub, probably won't do much. But turn the tower restaurant rotation speed up so fast that meatballs roll off the tables, now you're getting somewhere.

And a couple of designated times per hour to let people throw stuff off the observation platform. O'Rourke's first idea is water balloons.

He's is on to something. Boring doesn't make it.

I hope Michael's suggestions get city leaders thinking out of the box. After all, a city hall that can come up with a Gumby statue downtown, a pink elephant building, and an art fence in front of the justice center, should be able to get creative about the Tower of the Americas, too.
