A&M Shuns Race Card

Texas A&M is taking the race card out of its deck.

The university has decided to ignore people's skin color.

The Houston Chronicle reported, "Texas A&M University President Robert Gates is bucking the nation's higher education establishment by announcing the school would not use race as a factor in admissions or scholarships."

Gates very firmly stated that individuals should be judged only on their merit.

Makes sense to me. Putting anyone at the front of a line only because of skin color is discriminatory and just plain wrong.

A&M right now is a very lily-white school— 82% white, 9% Hispanic, 3% Asian-American, only 2% black. The Aggies' stated intent is to increase minority enrollment by so-called "outreach recruiting" and low-income scholarships.

A&M is talking the talk. We'll see if they walk the walk by actually taking in more minority students.
