Art, Is That You?

San Antonio does have some wonderful public art.

The Riverwalk itself is art. The Dionicio Rodriguez concrete footbridge in Brackenridge Park, and the entrance to Sunken Garden— good art, no question.

On the other hand, we endure the red Gumby structure downtown. And the so-called Art Fence, a world-class embarassment.

But I offer a word of good cheer for people who have an inferiority complex about some of San Antonio's public art: there are cities with much worse taste than us.

One, surprisingly enough, turns out to be London.

London is considering a display of, quote "a car painted to look like it is covered with pigeon droppings." The pooped-upon art car would be put in Trafalger Square for one year.

I would put our Torch of Friendship Gumby erection up against a pigeon-pooped Ford Fiesta car any ol' day.

This makes me feel quite good about us.
