Men On Mars

So the president thinks we ought to send men to Mars. Who knows? Maybe the idea will inspire some doubters to think, "Y'know, Bush does have the vision thing after all!"

Buzz Aldrin will comment on the Mars Mission plan on my show today

I have always been a fan of space exploration. I covered our Apollo shots from the Manned Spacecraft Center. I was at JPL when the very first pictures came in from the surface of Mars. Space exploration is exciting stuff.

But now I think we cannot afford it. If we truly have tens of billions of extra dollars around, we have much better places to spend them.

The president's education program could use some funding. Schools are cutting back programs for gifted children, because the No Child Left Behind plan came without the extra funding it needs.

In Bexar County, tens of thousands of children have lost medical coverage, while wealthy people nationwide were having their taxes reduced. Veterans promised medical care after retirement, see that pledge broken, over lack of money.

Spending billions on a manned Mars mission would be fun fun fun, but I think it wouldn't be very responsible.
