Remote Terrorism

They come out with reports saying how much time we waste every year sitting in traffic. Or waiting in line. One report said Americans spend X amount of time waiting for internet pages to download.

Why don't they take a look at the REAL time waster: bad remotes. Billions of hours are wasted on remote controls. TV remotes, VCR clickers, DVD remotes. What do they have in common? Bad, terrible, horrible button design.

A remote designer goes for looks. He doesn't care whether it's useable. He makes the Rewind button the same size, shape, color and texture as the Clear or Stop or Mute buttons. The buttons are lookalike clones.

It wouldn't surprise me if terrorist designers have infiltrated the TV remote-control industry. When you add up all the seconds and minutes, bad remotes are sapping away huge chunks of our nation's time. It kind of makes me afraid that, in their small way, the terrorist designers have won.
