Calling All Howitzers

The Army has notified some ski resorts that the cannons it loaned them must now be returned, because they're needed in our two wars.

A howitzer is a cannon, usually on wheels, usually pulled by a truck. It can fire a big ol' bullet five or ten miles. A new 105 millimeter one will set you back around a million bucks.

The Army loaned five howitzers to two ski resorts for avalanche duty. Now Mammoth and Alpine Meadows have been told to give 'em back. The Army says they are M119 cannons, relatively lightweight and suitable for "air mobile" operations. The five cannons are needed right away in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I am trying very hard not to think that this indicates any kind of US equipment shortages over there.
