We're So Secure After terrorists drove a boat full of explosives into the USS Cole four years ago, the Navy started a new policy of not letting small boats approach our ships. The deaths of the 17 dead Cole sailors would not be in vain.
On Thursday a small boat came so close to the USS Kennedy that the carrier actually ran over it. The collision happened at night during flight operations in the Arabian Gulf. How in the world did our Navy allow a small boat so close to an aircraft carrier? Is the Navy securing our vessels or not? Obviously not, unfortunately. On Saturday the airspace over President Bush's Crawford Ranch was violated. The Houston Chronicle notes that "When Bush is in Crawford, as he was this weekend, airspace is restricted within a 30-mile radius of his ranch." The plane that violated the ranch's airspace was traced to Arlington, where police promptly detained people from the wrong airplane for an hour, and allowed the real culprit to walk away. We are so secure, aren't we. Sometimes the fight against terrorism seems very much like the Keystone Kops in a fusillade of custard pies.
