Aquifer Protection

City Council today considers letting you vote on aquifer protection. This is the project we did once before, in which an 1/8th-cent sales tax is used to buy land over the aquifer recharge zone.

It's a way to keep at least some aquifer land undeveloped.

Last time, it worked splendidly, and then the tax period expired as it was supposed to.

Now it's time to decide whether to let you vote on another Aquifer Protection Initiative. But some on city council are reluctant. Maybe because they take money from developers, maybe for other reasons. But it would be wrong to not even allow people to vote.

Council should vote today to put aquifer land set-asides on the ballot. This council has a skimpy track record of letting people vote: remember the PGA Village issue, and the current Prop. 13 tax cap for the elderly and disabled.

Letting people vote is the right way to go. The American way. San Antonio's elected leaders should vote YES on letting us vote on setting aside aquifer land.
