![]() Brad Messer Commentary KTSA Friday, September 24, 2004 Now they're thinking about bringing the draft back, we hear. I don't know precisely who "they" is, or have any proof that they are ginning up a scheme it's just "in the air" that the draft may be coming back, and that they are looking for thousands of draft board volunteers. You can see why people would believe it. We may invade Iran. North Korea may flare up. You can't keep cycling the same National Guard people in and out of Iraq for years and years. We already don't have enough troops to go around. So, the talk goes, the draft is coming back. If it does, it ought to be fair. No rich kid exemptions. No getting out of being drafted because of political pull. If your number comes up, you go. If you happen to be the son or grandson of a congressman or Senator, you go. Can anyone even imagine a military draft in which people with connections couldn't get a King's X? That's how it ought to be: if everybody's gonna get drafted, everybody ought to ge drafted.
