Fingers In Ears

The election's 13 days away and Bush and Kerry are on afterburners. Saying wilder stuff, making looser accusations, not letting facts slow them down a bit.

Kerry wrongly claims Bush plans to cut Social Security benefits. Bush claims Kerry is the most liberal Senator: the record shows he isn't. Bush claims Kerry will hit terrorists only after they hit us, whereas Kerry says he'd use preemptive strikes. Kerry misrepresents the drug companies' tax breaks.

We can take only so much, gentlemen, and then we zone out.

I did yesterday during a television newscast. Bush was talking talking, Kerry was talking talking, everything was spin and slant and hogslop rhetoric. I realized I was looking at the wall thinking about what I would like for supper— and it wasn't hogslop.

The attention deficit was the mental equivalent of sticking my fingers in my ears to not hear something.

Thirteen more days. Both of them taking talking warp speed. Please, let us vote. They'll be quiet then, won't they?
