Natalia
school-uniform lawsuit settled: Bates won't have to wear 'em
I'll have the father, Kirk
Bates, on my Thursday show. The wording of this joint press release
looks to me like the Bates family had the Natalia school board screaming
"YOU my Daddy! YOU my Daddy!"
Both parties
agree to issue a joint press release that states the following:
Over the past two years or so, the Bates family has pursued, based upon
strongly held philosophical and religious beliefs, an exemption from
the Natalia ISD*s uniform wearing requirement. The District*s Board
of Trustees, also acting on the strongly held belief that its actions
were in compliance with the law and the District*s own policies, denied
the requested exemption for two school years. Although the Bates family
and the Board of Trustees may never see eye-to-eye on every aspect of
this situation, they have agreed to set aside their differences and
agree to a compromise that everyone involved believes is in the best
interests of the District, its students, its staff and its patrons.
The District wants to expressly note for the public record that it admires
the Bates family for its perseverance and dedication in seeking to clarify
the law and in fighting for their beliefs.

Sometimes when young
struggling nations emerge as democracies, the United States feels inclined
to throw them a little aid. Iraq is one example. California might be the
next if Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger has his way.
